Moments after the 4.3.2.1. premier, Danny Walker caught up with Mr ‘Oi Mysize’, Adam Deacon, to talk about Noel Clarke, Jay and Moony and his new writing and directorial venture Anuvahood…
How was the premier of 4.3.2.1. …
It was a good night, great seeing Aml [Ameen] and Femi [Oyeniran] again, ain’t seen them in a little while.
And the atmosphere?
Yeah the red carpet is always a surreal one to be honest. But just like Adulthood so many people came down to show support. I love meeting the fans, I swear to God the fact they show so much love is the reason I gotta keep pursuing this, sometimes you feel like giving up but then you meet some of your supporters and you realise you just gotta keep on it. This really is my life…
Yeah, there were a LOT of fans out, we saw you went smart/ casual, how long did it take you to get ready?
I was performing at the after party so decided to go bottom half casual, don’t wanna be dancing around in shoes so I thought mix it up a little. But yeah I was running very late that day! Hold tight Numumm in Covent Garden for the last minute hook up!
We’ve seen 4.3.2.1., we like 4.3.2.1., tell us about your role… and what do you bring to your characters?
I play Dillon… another hot head! He’s got the maddest game with the girls. To be honest Noel let me choose my part and I chose Dillon. I think he brought a little comedy to the film and definitely made it that little bit more street
You’re all over the 4.3.2.1. Soundtrack and you’ve just dropped your new video On This Ting but we hear you’re involved in writing, directing and starring in a spin-off of Kidulthood/ Adulthood, theGunslinger produced Anuvarhood?
Yeah, just finished writing my first feature film, Anuvarhood. Don’t want to say to much at this stage but I’ve been wanting to do this for years and I can’t even tell you how hard its been getting this film off the ground.
Sounds like a long/ hard process…
Yeah, but its finally happening. The film’s a laugh out loud comedy set in the Goonbred Estate centred around this total loser James. I would say it’s a Kidulthood meets Friday type of thing. I feel we’ve had all the depressing gritty films about a kid with a gun and now we need to lighten it up. It’s not all doom and gloom in the hood!
Jay and Moony were some of the best characters we’ve seen on screen in UK movies, what will they be getting up to in this outing?
I think Jay and Moony were definitely stand out characters in the hood films, it was because of the banter between them, people warmed to them and related. So many other TV shows and films nowadays try so hard to recapture that street banter but to be honest if an actor doesn’t have a clue about that world and is just reading a script line for line, it will never come across authentic and that was the difference with Jay and Moony.
And your input…
The fact is, as Noel would tell you, I changed my lines in the script and improvised the most out of any actor on set to make it work, to make it funny and authentic, when I realised that I achieved what I had set out to do on Kidulthood and it worked I definitely knew that one day I would want to write a comedy with Jay’s type of character in mind, this is Jay and Spoony with a big twist! Oi Mysize! Prepare to piss your pants!
When is Anuvarhood out and will Noel Clarke be helping you stay true to the format?
Me and Noel have always worked very closely over the years and Noel has always given me a lot of advise along the way but to be honest I wanted this film to come from me, I have my own vision for Anuvarhood and I wanted it to be a totally separate film to the other two. It’s my own comedy take on it. New settings, new characters, I just wanna make something that’s not been seen before. Hold tight Noel though, he was the first. I’m hoping we are gonna start filming this summer so it should be out sometime next year.
Anything sooner for us to watch out for?
Yeah, I’m currently working on a few projects at the moment, one being a comedy called Phoneshop for E4. Watch out for my latest film Bonded By Blood coming out later this summer, look out for my new track with Pro Green later this year too.
